Pediatric Dentistry

This curriculum bundle provides content related to pediatric dentistry. This includes webinars/articles on infant oral care, dental caries – risk assessment, prevention and management, molar hypomineralization, mouth breathing, dental trauma, and tooth avulsion, and childhood abuse.

Update on Dental Trauma

This webinar addresses some of the important endodontic considerations for the diagnosis and management of dental traumatic injuries and highlights important updates in the International Association of Dental Traumatology guidelines. Specifically, the principles of diagnosis of pulp necrosis following traumatic injuries, the classification and management of root resorption following traumatic injuries, and the prognosis and management of specific dental injuries in mature and immature teeth will be discussed.

Dr. Fouad obtained his DDS, Certificate of Endodontics and MS at the University of Iowa. He served on the faculty and in various administrative roles at University of Connecticut Health Center, the University of Maryland, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is currently Professor and Chair, Department of Endodontics, and Director, Advanced Endodontics Program, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Fouad has published over 95 peer-reviewed manuscripts, 24 textbook chapters, and 140 abstracts. He edited and co-authored the textbooks: Endodontic Microbiology (now in its second edition) as well as the fifth and sixth editions of Endodontics: Principles and Practice. He is a Diplomate and Past President of the American Board of Endodontics, and an Associate Editor of the Journal of Endodontics. He received the Distinguished Scientist Award from the Pulp Biology and Regeneration Group of the International Association of Dental Research.

Dr. Ira B. Lamster received his D.D.S. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook (1977), his M.M.Sc. from Harvard University (1980) and a Certificate of Special Training in Periodontology from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (1980). Dr. Lamster served as Dean of the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine from 2001 to 2012, and Senior Vice President of Columbia University Medical Center from 2006 to 2012. He was on the faculty of the Mailman School of Public Health, Department of Health Policy and Management, from 2012 to 2017. Dr. Lamster is currently Dean Emeritus, Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, a Clinical Professor on the faculty of the Stony Brook University, School of Dental Medicine, and a member of the Santa Fe Group.

Dr. Lamster is the author of more than 200 manuscripts and book chapters. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the International Dental Journal from 2015 until 2021. Dr. Lamster’s research efforts have focused on diagnostic testing and risk assessment for periodontal disease, the interrelationship of periodontal disease and systemic disease, the oral health care needs of older adults, and the future of dental education and practice.

Dr. Natalie Carr-Bustillo attended the University of South Florida for undergraduate studies then attended Northwestern University Dental School in the early admissions program from 1993 to 1997. She completed her certificate in Pediatric Dentistry at The University of Texas Houston from 1997 to 1999 and then continued to receive her Masters degree in Oral Biology in 2000. Dr. Carr-Bustillo worked in a private practice in Texas as an associate for 5 years prior to moving back to Florida in 2002. She worked in group practice for eight years then opened her private practice, Carr Pediatric Dentistry, in 2010 in Riverview Florida.
Dr. Natalie Carr- Bustillo has represented both the dental profession and pediatric dentistry by serving on local and state organizations. She is past president of the West Coast District Dental Association, Hillsborough County Dental Association and the Florida Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. She has served as faculty for the University of Florida, Department of Community Dentistry and The University of South Florida Medical School, Department of Pediatrics.

A fourth year dental student at New York University College of Dentistry, Vanessa Mancuso Cortinas has been involved in serving and providing dental care for underserved and underrepresented minorities. As the President of Hispanic Student Dental Society, Vanessa advocates for her patients she treats at the University. In addition, she organizes outreaches for members to attend and provide free oral health screenings, she also organizes fundraisers to provide food and clothing for children in third world countries one including the Dominican Republic. As a leader for Saturday Academy a program built to help High School Students with the college application process while introducing them to a career in dentistry; Mrs. Cortinas is able to connect with minority students, help them apply to college, prepare personal statements, prepare for interviews, understand the financials of undergraduate loans. As a dental student she serves as a peer mentor for new incoming students living far away from home, helping them get situated into the program and serve as a mentor for their four years at the College of Dentistry. Mrs. Cortinas also serves as a mentor for the interns of The Bringing Smiles Dental Enrichment Program at the College of Dentistry. A program for pre dental students pursuing a career in dentistry. She educates the interns as they shadow her through clinic and observe her working with her patients. She is a leader at the University and a role model to many. She was one of only two recipients of the 2019 Colgate-Palmolive/NMF Dental Leadership Program Scholarship, which recognizes underrepresented minority dental students who have demonstrated commitment to leadership and serving medically underserved communities. This coming July 20’ she will be beginning her Periodontology residency at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine.

Stephanie Aya is a fourth year dental student at the NYU College of Dentistry. She was born in Miami, Fl and is of Colombian ethnicity. After graduating from the University of Florida with a Bachelor’s degree in BIology and a minor in Anthropologie and Latin American studies she decided to pursue dentistry. As a dental student at NYU she has been an active member of the HIspanic Student Dental Association as their Vice President. She is passionate about her roots and about diversifying her community by engaging others in the Latino culture through her own lens and her experience as a Latina in the US and in the field of dentistry. This past October 19’ she recently received first place in the Colgate-Palmolive Nuestros Niños Competition from the Hispanic Dental Association. The winning case study, Mesiodens: A Clinical Comprehensive Evaluation of Pediatric Patients in a School-based Dental Program, was based on the dental treatment provided at PS 188 as part of the Bringing Smiles Dental Education Program which creates access to care for the pediatric patient population. She has also been part of the class of 2020 student council for two years as their historian. On her free time Stephanie loves to work on her artistic endeavors such as drawing, painting and playing music. She also enjoys traveling and visiting museums. She loves serving the community especially by mentoring the youth. Her passion lies in the field of pediatric dentistry. This coming July 20’ Stephanie will begin her Pediatric Dentistry residency at the Bronx Care hospital.

He chairs the Australian Dental Association’s Oral Health Committee, and is a past ADA President in his home state of Queensland. He holds Masters degrees in Public Health and Epidemiology, and is currently studying for a PhD in dental public health. Dr Foley lectures frequently on water fluoridation and evidence-based dentistry.
