Substance use disorders affect individuals of all ages, and lifetime substance use is associated with numerous chronic oral and systemic health problems. The purpose of this course is to review common substance use disorders (SUD) and how to safely manage patients with SUD who are undergoing dental treatment. Medications for addiction treatment (MAT) will be discussed, including the essential role medications play in successful recovery. Treatment planning considerations, including the need for laboratory tests, the safe use of local anesthetics with vasoconstrictor, risks for infection, bleeding and medical emergencies, and prescribing considerations will be discussed.
Participants will learn:
- Identify and discuss risk factors for developing SUD.
- Discuss risk factors, associated symptoms and treatment options for alcohol use disorder (AUD) and opioid use disorder (OUD).
- Discuss why medication for addiction treatment (MAT) is used for SUD and the effects produced by these medications.
- Discuss treatment planning considerations and related modifications when managing dental patients with SUD.

She has presented over 1,000 invited lectures and has over 125 professional publications. She is Professor, Course Director of Oral Medicine and Pharmacology, and Assistant Dean for Research at the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health, A.T. Still University (ATSU), where she teaches part-time in the Special Care Clinic. Ann is also a faculty member in the NYU Langone AEGD residency program at ATSU. Ann was awarded fellowship status in special care dental hygiene in 2016 and received the Education Award in 2021 from the Special Care Dentistry Association.

Lamster received his D.D.S. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook (1977), his M.M.Sc. from Harvard University (1980) and a Certificate of Special Training in Periodontology from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (1980). Dr. Lamster served as Dean of the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine from 2001 to 2012, and Senior Vice President of Columbia University Medical Center from 2006 to 2012. He was on the faculty of the Mailman School of Public Health, Department of Health Policy and Management, from 2012 to 2017. Dr. Lamster is currently Dean Emeritus, Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, a Clinical Professor on the faculty of the Stony Brook University, School of Dental Medicine, and a member of the Santa Fe Group.
Dr. Lamster is the author of more than 200 manuscripts and book chapters. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the International Dental Journal from 2015 until 2021. Dr. Lamster’s research efforts have focused on diagnostic testing and risk assessment for periodontal disease, the interrelationship of periodontal disease and systemic disease, the oral health care needs of older adults, and the future of dental education and practice.
