The Joy of Treating Special Care Populations will cover what they didn’t teach us in dental and dental, dental hygiene and dental assisting school and how can we make treating an underrepresented population a win/win situation.
Participants will learn:
- Reviewing the disparity of care for those with developmental disabilities
- Learning some basics of how we start the journey towards health equity in our dental practice for those with intellectual/developmental disabilities (IDD)
- Dispelling the myths and fears of treating those with IDD
- Reviewing minimally invasive approaches towards maximal rewards and joy in dentistry

Lamster received his D.D.S. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook (1977), his M.M.Sc. from Harvard University (1980) and a Certificate of Special Training in Periodontology from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (1980). Dr. Lamster served as Dean of the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine from 2001 to 2012, and Senior Vice President of Columbia University Medical Center from 2006 to 2012. He was on the faculty of the Mailman School of Public Health, Department of Health Policy and Management, from 2012 to 2017. Dr. Lamster is currently Dean Emeritus, Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, a Clinical Professor on the faculty of the Stony Brook University, School of Dental Medicine, and a member of the Santa Fe Group.
Dr. Lamster is the author of more than 200 manuscripts and book chapters. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the International Dental Journal from 2015 until 2021. Dr. Lamster’s research efforts have focused on diagnostic testing and risk assessment for periodontal disease, the interrelationship of periodontal disease and systemic disease, the oral health care needs of older adults, and the future of dental education and practice.

He has lectured nationally and internationally in the areas of special care dentistry, rotary endodontics, implant restorations, and minimally invasive dentistry. He was active with Special Olympics Special Smiles program (ret. Global Clinical Advisor), Immediate Past President American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry (AADMD) and President Special Care Dentistry Association (SCDA). Retired from 37 years of teaching with the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry as a Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences. He directed a postdoctoral residency program (Advanced Education in General Dentistry) where he taught dentists to incorporate minimally invasive, science-based dentistry strategies to patients with healthcare needs as well as those needing treatment in hospital settings.
Recently inducted as a Professor emeritus from the University of the Pacific Dugoni School of Dentistry and named the Dental Department Head for Kramer Davis Health (a transdisciplinary medical/dental center exclusively for those with IDD) in Nashville, Tennessee.
