Psychologists have identified those interventions that are most likely to be effective in changing a patient’s behaviour. Drawing together a large body of research, Michie et al (2011) developed a model of behaviour change which seeks to identify the core elements of successful approaches. The COM-B model suggests that behaviour change occurs when there is Capability, Opportunity and Motivation. Capability refers to both the physical and psychological skills to perform the behaviour, Opportunity has physical components (e.g. access to resources) and social environment aspects (e.g. exposure to ideas) such that the person feels able to undertake the new behaviour, finally Motivation (M) refers to the person’s conscious (e.g. planning and decision making) and automatic (e.g. innate drives, emotional reactions, habits) processes said to underline the emission of any behaviour. In my talk I will look at each component in turn, drawing on the published literature to outline simple and brief ways that the dental team can enhance patients’ Capability, Opportunities and Motivation to change their oral health related behaviour.
