Cultural Considerations when Making Presentations for Older Adults

This presentation reveals a General Relations Approach to communicating with persons, especially older adults, from diverse backgrounds in group settings.

This approach stresses the importance of gaining more background knowledge about group participants, increasing our awareness of the group participants’ unique situations, and acquiring the skills to communicate on an appropriate level of communication when considering health literacy issues.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand how increased background information about group participants can shape culturally sensitive group presentations.
  • Develop an appreciation of the role that unconscious biases can play when communicating with older adults in a group setting.
  • Describe how to best communicate in a group setting and with written information when group participants differ in their health literacy levels.

Course Support Materials:

  1. Presentation Slides
  2. Increasing Orthodontic Patient Cooperation
