This lecture will give a brief description and categorization of various medical and developmental diagnoses. The object of the lecture is to provide learners a way to assimilate and understand the similarities that exist among numerous diagnoses and the common oral findings associated with these disorders. Creating an interdisciplinary approach to developing an oral care plan will then be discussed.

Participants will learn:

  • Understand common elements of developmental and acquired disabilities and disorders.
  • Understand common oral health findings for various disabling conditions.
  • Understand oral health treatment concerns related to oral care planning.
  • Understand the inter-professional planning necessary to provide comprehensive care for individuals with disabilities.

Dr. Risner-Bauman serves as Associate Director of the Care Center for Persons with Disabilities, Assistant Professor of Clinical Oral Medicine, and Assistant Professor of Clinical Restorative Dentistry at Penn Dental Medicine. After earning her DDS at the University of Iowa in 1993, she completed a fellowship with the Academy of Dentistry for Persons with Disabilities American Board Special Care Dentistry in 2011 and her Diplomate from the American Board of Special Care Dentistry in 2019. Dr. Risner-Bauman brings a depth of clinical care experience in public health settings to Penn Dental Medicine, most recently serving as a General Dentist in the Department of Surgery of Binghamton General Hospital, as well as Dental Clinic Supervisor of Broome Dental Center within the New York State (NYS) Office for People with Developmental Disabilities. She has also served as Dental Clinic Supervisor for the NYS Department of Corrections, Tioga Dental Services, Cerebral Palsy and Handicapped Children’s Association of Chemung County, and the Chemung County Health Department. Dr. Risner-Bauman was previously appointed as Assistant Professor of Restorative Dentistry and General Practice Faculty Preceptor at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine School of Dental Medicine.
