With the Special healthcare needs (SHCN) population aging and increasing in numbers and need, dentistry MUST change the dynamics of dental treatment from surgical to prevention. Hospital dentistry under general anesthesia is becoming more difficult to access or find providers. Technology and chemotherapeutics have come a long way and we should employ some of the strategies to prevent disease and start treating the etiology. Retired from 37 years of teaching with the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry as a Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences. He directed a postdoctoral residency program (Advanced Education in General Dentistry) where he taught dentists to incorporate minimally invasive, science-based dentistry strategies to patients with healthcare needs as well as those needing treatment in hospital settings.
Recently inducted as a Professor emeritus from the University of the Pacific Dugoni School of Dentistry and named the Dental Department Head for Kramer Davis Health (a transdisciplinary medical/dental center exclusively for those with IDD) in Nashville, Tennessee.
