Cancer therapy can lead to a number of side-effects that can impact oral health and dental care.

This two-part course will present the most common oral complications of cancer therapy and their impacts on dental care. Case Discussions are included to emphasize real-world application of the material in your practice. Part 2 presents the oral complications of radiation therapy for head and neck cancer, as well as medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) in patients with cancer. Topics covered include radiation-induced oral mucositis, hyposalivation/xerostomia, oral infections, osteoradionecrosis, implications for dental care before and after radiation therapy, and MRONJ in oncology patients.

Participants will learn:

  • To recognize and manage the oral complications of radiation therapy for head and neck cancer
  • To recognize and manage medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) in oncology patients
  • To understand the implications for dental care before, during, and after cancer therapy

Dr. Rajesh V. Lalla is a Professor of Oral Medicine and Associate Dean for Research at the UConn School of Dental Medicine. He is a clinician-scientist who conducts clinical research on oral complications of cancer therapy. His research has been funded by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), foundations, and industry. Dr. Lalla has published over 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals, many of them dealing with oral complications of cancer therapy. He has been invited to speak on this topic at several national and international meetings.
