The Introduction of Artificial Intelligence in Clinical Dentistry

Artificial Intelligence (AI) now impacts our personal and professional lives in many ways. Computers are performing tasks traditionally carried out by humans, and the applications in healthcare and specifically in dental medicine are a particularly active area of investigation.
This webinar will review the introduction of AI in dental medicine. As background, terms used in this field will be defined, and the applications in general health care will be reviewed. Concepts underlying the use of AI in dentistry will be examined, and examples of current and future applications will be provided. AI may change the nature of dental practice in regard to patient management and reimbursement, and the presenters will discuss both potential enhancements, and current misconceptions, associated with these technological advances.

  • Define AI and other terms used in this field
  • Application of AI in medicine/health care.
  • Concepts underlying the use of AI in clinical dentistry.
  • Examples of the use of AI in dentistry
  • The future of AI in clinical dentistry. from the perspective of the insurance industry, DSOs, private practice.

Dr. Roark brings 20 years of private practice, non-profit, and DSO experience to Sage Dental Management. In addition to owning a successful private practice in Nantucket, Massachusetts, she served as Clinical Officer two national DSO’s and was formerly the Director of General Dentistry and Associate Professor at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center.  Additionally, she sits on the Executive Board of Sage Dental Management, is a member of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine Board of Fellows, and a member of Chief.

Dr. Roark received a Master of Science in Health Care Management degree from Harvard University and earned her dental degree Magna Cum Laude from the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine at Boston University.    Her hobbies include actively mentoring teens, advising dental product start-ups, and SEC football.

Dr. Ira B. Lamster received his D.D.S. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook (1977), his M.M.Sc. from Harvard University (1980) and a Certificate of Special Training in Periodontology from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (1980). Dr. Lamster served as Dean of the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine from 2001 to 2012, and Senior Vice President of Columbia University Medical Center from 2006 to 2012. He was on the faculty of the Mailman School of Public Health, Department of Health Policy and Management, from 2012 to 2017. Dr. Lamster is currently Dean Emeritus, Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, a Clinical Professor on the faculty of the Stony Brook University, School of Dental Medicine, and a member of the Santa Fe Group.

Dr. Lamster is the author of more than 200 manuscripts and book chapters. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the International Dental Journal from 2015 until 2021. Dr. Lamster’s research efforts have focused on diagnostic testing and risk assessment for periodontal disease, the interrelationship of periodontal disease and systemic disease, the oral health care needs of older adults, and the future of dental education and practice.
