

This presentation will provide management techniques to overcome resistant and aggressive behaviors and how to incorporate these techniques into the oral care plan. It will discuss medical immobilization and stabilization techniques for use during in office care and home care plans, including consent concerns. Examples will be shown of how to safely provide these techniques during oral care. The presentation will also provide insight into how to share these techniques with direct care givers and individuals.
Participants will learn:
- Identify and differentiate management techniques, including psychological modalities, mechanical and physical immobilization and stabilization, and restraint.
- Describe how to incorporate these techniques safely and effectively into the oral care plan and other daily living skills.
- Demonstrate how to share these techniques with others.
- Identify what type of consent may be needed for what types of interventions. Describe how to recommend and get interventions incorporated into an oral care plan.

More courses with Alicia Risner-BaumanDr. Risner-Bauman serves as Associate Director of the Care Center for Persons with Disabilities, Assistant Professor of Clinical Oral Medicine, and Assistant Professor of Clinical Restorative Dentistry at Penn Dental Medicine. After earning her DDS at the University of Iowa in 1993, she completed a fellowship with the Academy of Dentistry for Persons with Disabilities American Board Special Care Dentistry in 2011 and her Diplomate from the American Board of Special Care Dentistry in 2019. Dr. Risner-Bauman brings a depth of clinical care experience in public health settings to Penn Dental Medicine, most recently serving as a General Dentist in the Department of Surgery of Binghamton General Hospital, as well as Dental Clinic Supervisor of Broome Dental Center within the New York State (NYS) Office for People with Developmental Disabilities. She has also served as Dental Clinic Supervisor for the NYS Department of Corrections, Tioga Dental Services, Cerebral Palsy and Handicapped Children’s Association of Chemung County, and the Chemung County Health Department. Dr. Risner-Bauman was previously appointed as Assistant Professor of Restorative Dentistry and General Practice Faculty Preceptor at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine School of Dental Medicine.
