Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)
- An OSCE is a standardized, simulation-based assessment tool used to comprehensively evaluate candidate’s cognitive, psychomotor, & affective clinical skills.
- It is a structured station-based examination designed to assess multiple students’ clinical performances over the same materials, at the same time.
- Each station is timed & creates a simulated scenario that often involves the use of Standardized Patients (or actors), typodonts, manikins, medical histories, radiographs, mouth models, instruments, etc.
- Each station tests different clinical skills and levels of knowledge based on predetermined criteria that are evaluated by calibrated instructors using standardized checklists and rubrics.
- All of this is achieved without ever altering the health of a human subject.
